How to Use Tarot?
Shuffle the cards of your tarot deck. As you start shuffling the cards, focus on the question or topic you want to consult about.
Next, we will teach you how to do and interpret 1-card, 3-card, and 5-card spreads, although there are many more complex spreads.
1-Card Spread
The 1-card spread is a good way to start getting to know the Tarot card by card. It’s a good step if you don’t feel confident delving into more cards and their interpretations. It’s also useful for quick consultations.
As the name suggests, you will draw only one card for this spread. Since it’s only one card, it will focus on the immediate answer to your question. Pay attention to the position of the card, whether it came upright or reversed. Then consult the quick interpretation guide of the oracle you’re using.
Abstract or Reflect?
The fact that it’s a 1-card reading doesn’t mean the answer is simple. You can abstract the response to the most basic, like a yes or a no. For example, you can decide beforehand, “If it comes upright, it means YES; if it comes reversed, it means NO.” Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the meaning of the card. Observe its details, colors, flowers, or other elements the card has. This will not only help you learn the interpretations of the card but also help you discover the message being given to you.
3-Card Spread
The 3-card spread is ideal for focusing the consultation on three points in time: past, present, and future. It’s a great step to start interpreting the stories and messages presented to you through more than one card.
1. Place three cards facing each other, either using your cloth spread or a MailoniKat board, or if you prefer, on a flat and ideally clean surface.
*If you’re using the MailoniKat guide boards, use the numbers on the bottom parts to guide you.
2. The first card you’re going to flip is the middle card (2). This card speaks about the present of the consultation. It can represent a problem or a doubt. Take into account once again whether the card is upright or reversed and consult the quick guide to know the meaning of the card.
3. The second card you’re going to flip is the first card (1). This card will provide you with information about the past of the consultation, the origins of the problem, or what has caused the situation to be as it is today. Once again, is the card upright or reversed? Refer back to the quick guide to see the corresponding interpretation.
4. Flip the third and final card (3). This card will provide you with information about the future of the consultation or the issue at hand. Once again, carefully observe the details of the card and use the quick guide as a reference to understand its interpretation.
5. With all the cards on the table, try to interpret the overall message. In our example, we can observe that there is currently family discord, arguments, and a lack of companionship with people in the personal circle. This can be attributed to a previous material lack, as these types of deficiencies tend to bring out the worst in us. Based on these two cards, we can understand that these are problems and arguments that need to be faced and overcome. Through honesty and emotional wisdom, we can improve the situation that concerns us.
5-Card Spread (Simple Cross)
The simple cross spread is convenient for starting with more complex spreads and interpretations. This spread allows you to explore multiple topics in depth. Below, we show you the basic structure and order for reading the cards:
1. Place five cards face up in the order shown below. You can use your cloth spread or one of the MailoniKat boards. Alternatively, you can also place them on a flat and ideally clean surface.
*If you’re using the MailoniKat guide boards, use the numbers at the top of the panels as a reference to guide you.
2. The first card you will reveal (1) will show you the past of the consultation, that is, the origin of the situation being explored. Once again, observe the details of the card and, using the quick guide, guide yourself to understand its interpretation.
3. The second card (2) will show us the immediate future of the consultation, that is, how the situation will unfold if no changes occur along the way. Once again, observe the details of the card and, using the quick guide, guide yourself to understand its interpretation. Begin to intertwine the interpretations, what are the consistencies between both cards?
4. The third card (3) will give us a good idea of the circumstances that are in our favor for the resolution of the consulted situation or problem. Observe if the card is upright or reversed and use the guide to know its interpretation. Begin to analyze how these favorable circumstances are influencing the development of the immediate future.
5. The fourth card (4) reveals the circumstances that are against the resolution of the consultation. Keep in mind that these circumstances can be of a material, economic, spiritual, mental, or emotional nature. Try to understand how these circumstances have influenced the development of the immediate future.
6. The fifth and final card (5) establishes the current state of things. With this card, you can complete the interpretation you have been developing through the other four cards. It will allow you to fully understand the current state of the consultation and the reason behind it.
7. With all the cards on the table, try to interpret the overall message. In our example, we can conclude that a lack of planning has contributed to the development of this situation. If no changes occur, this situation will cause you anxiety in the near future. Fortunately, you have a good team willing to collaborate with you to resolve it. However, your passions and desires may be hindering the equation. It’s important for you to control your desires to avoid the conflicts and disagreements you are currently experiencing.
